Mike Kimberley says the company is looking to play a major role in making the world's cars more environmentally friendly.

His comments come after Lotus Engineering, and parent company Proton, signed a major deal to develop a green automotive research and test centre in Saudi Arabia.

The car company is now working with engineering clients in almost every continent of the world, from its engineering bases in the UK, the US, Malaysia and China.

Mr Kimberley expects hybrid engine technology to become increasingly popular and he is determined to see Lotus Engineering become world leaders in the field.

He also revealed the company's sportscar division was performing well, despite fears of a recession in the US and Europe and added that the credit crunch had hit sales in the US, which were down 40pc, but sales in the UK were holding up and in Europe and the rest of the world were 100pc higher than expected.

Plans for the company's new model - a GT codenamed Project Eagle - are progressing well with the car due to be launched at the London Motor Show in July.

Já agora, aqui vai a ultima spyshot do Eagle:
